Default new solution for tank stand

I got a really good deal on a 55g tank last week that had everything but the stand. I checked around and couldn't find a used tank stand to buy for a reasonable price. Then when I was looking through our local Bargain Finders papers I saw the perfect solution- an old floor model stereo for $20. It's just the right size with about a foot left over . So if anyone else is looking for a stand for their large tank try out old stereos. I was told that the stereo I bought was a small one.

I have an old floor stereo as well. Mine is about 5.5 feet long. The only thing you really need to watch out for is if the top of the stereo is going to support the weight of your 55 gallon tank(550+ lbs) without breaking. You also might want to lay a piece of 1/2" - 3/4" plywood between the tank and stand to ensure even support of the tank.

I did, and took my mouse sander and rounded the edges so that it would look like my other 2- 55g aquariums and not just a tank on a piece of furniture. I also painted the 3/4" a medium brown to match the oak looking edges on my tank. The painted plywood with the rounded edges make the tank and the stereo look they came together instead of 2 completely different pieces.

I'm sorry, but I can't. I don't have a digital camera. I let a relative borrow mine and it got broken. She said she would replace it but it's been 6 months.I have learned my lesson about loaning things out. If I do, I'm gonna keep something of theirs that is of equal value til I get mine back.

Just let the air out of their tires nightly until they replace the camera. It's not like you are going to be destroying anything, just making it very inconvenient for them.

If the person is highly unobservant, or the temps get below 10 degrees fahrenheit at night, letting the air out of the tires could well destroy the tires when they try to drive on them. Something to keep in mind. ;-)

But, on topic.... I didn't know stereos were that big and sturdy! I had contemplated using an old 50s giant TV set that is a piece of furniture in and of itself before, though. Maybe one that doesn't work so I can gut it.
