Default Mandatory New Account Aproval

I am sure that many of you guys have seen my rant posts about all the freaking spammers. I was thinking about it and I came up with a possible solution to help curb/eliminate these annoying posts by implementing an account approval process. I have been on some forums that use this to do exactly this. It is kind of annoying for the users who want to ask questions, but there are mods on most of the time anyway. What do you think about this and is it possible with this forum?

There are a lot of new signups each day here, and it's not always that easy to tell who is a spammer, unless they have something obvious in their username/email address. I used to run a forum and we did try this, and we were a much smaller forum. We found pretty quickly that if you made someone wait for approval then the chances of them coming back and posting depleted pretty rapidly. I know the spam is annoying but I think our mods do a good job of catching the posts pretty quickly, and those of us who have been here for even a short while can pick out the spam posts and ignore them without much trouble... Just my thoughts on the matter.

That makes great sense. That would definitely be a better solution than mine. MediaHound, you should totally do this.

Funny, i'm on here multiple times daily, for about 2 months and have yet to see a spam thread. Lol, maybe i'm in chat too much. x2 with summer, i would not have stuck around waiting for membership to be *approved* not when there are hundreds of other forums.

I log on here in the mornings and read the new post section the way some people read their morning paper and the amount of spam is getting out of hand. This morning there was over 130 spam posts just in the 1st 6 pages. I didn't even bother going on to the next pages to read any more.Do people get paid to post this kind of spam and clog up forums?

As I have been told before, there are bots that do this. I had made a suggestion to MediaHound this morning via PM that if it is possible to make a "3 strikes" rule where if 3 people reported a post then it would be auto removed or be invisible until a mod made it viewable again(if this is even possible).

It has never gotten to more than 2 reporting the same post before one of the mods come in and delete them so what would be the point of MediaHound setting it up.

It was just a thought I had that someone must be getting paid to doing those posts. Otherwise why spend all that time typing them up?If not, some people must be awfully bored.

My guess is that Chinese workers will do anything. Would you rather work in a sweat shop or an office?..... I know, I know, That was just mean.

It's hard to tell what goes on in the minds of fools who do stuff like clogging up forums with spam. I used to enjoy having a cup of coffee and reading the new posts in the mornings cause I wake up really early. Don't enjoy having to scroll down 10 spam posts to read 1 aquarium post, but it's getting that bad. I don't know if there is an effective way to prevent them or to block them once they've been caught.

Pulling from experience running a forum in the past, this wont fix the whole problem but may cut it down...there should be an option to block certain words from being used on the forum....how about blocking the words "ugg" and any other widely used spam words? Obviously they arent relevant to this forum so I do not see it hurting the user base any.

I am going to start collecting Quarters. After I have enough of them, I am going to fly to China and hunt me some spammers. When I find them I am going to go Charles Bronson on them.

It used to be mostly early in the mornings, not any more. I just logged on cause there's not much on tv and there's more of that junk on the new posts right now. Don't we have anyone who can try to protect this forum from that scum during regular hours?

Those that work nights will see more spam than most people.
