Default Make an ordament tank safe?

Hi there, i was just wondering . I have a Budda that i was wanting to use in my Betta tank set up, so when i got it i put it into a basin of water to check and loads of tiny bubbles came out of it from every where. So its not tank safe and wanted to know could i get this coated with something to make it safe , or is a dead loss? Thanks for any suggestions. Mark

It depends on what it is actually made of. If it is terra cotta it may have bubbles coming from it but it is still safe to use. Try the vinegar test on it and see if it bubbles with vinegar on it. That is the real test. Some ornaments will bubble simply because they are made of porous materials and as soon as the materials are filled with water they are safe. If they are painted, that may be another matter. Do you have a picture of the buddha?

I have boiled objects and let them set overnite in the water and they no longer bubbled and then they were no longer what I called threats to my tank and used them successfully.

I would investigate what is making it bubble before trying to "coat" it with anything that may complicate matters further and actually be more dangerous than the original substance that the buddha is made of.

Hi again. seem to be speaking to you all over this site lol. The Budda seams to be of brass tin like as i ping'd it with me finger. also there is a bit of the black coating that is of and its brass looking . it is coated inside and out , so i have just left it sitting in a basin of water and i will give it 24 hours to see if it stops bubbling and also any flaking or discolouration of the water. Thanks

Brass and metals I would not know about and would want you to get someone else's ideas on as I would be not sure enough to give you an educated guess on. Sorry.

Hi i beleave it is brass myself now. I have had it overnight in a bowl and when i came down this morning and looked there was no more bubbles coming from it. i also rubbed it and nothing came of it and also the water wasnt discoloured. i will put fresh water in it again and let it sit for a further 24hours just to make sure. Funny you say that white devil, it is already black with them greenie marks where you cant get brasso buffed off , so i am wondering has it been in a tank previous to me getting it.I would not brasso it anyways , id be putting pollutions into the tank . Anyways looks like me gonna have 2 Betta tanks then very soon once i get me first project up and running. Thanks again Mark

Yeah il give it a real good going over to make sure its clinicaly clean. When me tank gets set up after the betta one il show the results There was a spray called Plasti-Dip that waterproofs objects but ima sure there would be nasty chemicals in it so , i shall just leave it natural as it was intended to be.
