Default Anyone play violin?

My daughter is going into the 6th grade and found out she got to be in the orchestra! She will play the violin, which we are very excited about. However,I have no clue what to look for in a quality piece. We were looking at this:VIOLINSMART 4/4 Full Size Student Violin W/Bow Case and Rosin - Solid Black

She loves the color and I think its pretty unique. The problem is,we have no clue if the quality is any good.Any way we can tell without listening?Any good websites with good prices and good instruments?

Also we just found out that they have different sizes. How do i pick the right size?

I'm not sure about the violin, since I play flute, but I tend to be wary of cheap instruments. I know they're more affordable, but honestly, you get what you pay for. I found a site though, that I do trust to have good quality instruments at reasonable prices; Woodwinds and Brasswinds, Band Instruments and Musical Instruments | Woodwind & Brasswind It is a bit pricy, but you hopefully get something that lasts years. (as long as the 5th and 6th grade me doesn't decide to have a lightsaber fight with my flute) You can probably find some good deals on craigslist and eBay too.

Anyways, good luck! I'm in total support of the next generation learning music!

I second the Woodwind and Brasswind site. Call them. They're very helpful and have specialist in each instrument area--ask for the string folks. I started with the Bellafina 50, I think and it was playable and sound ok. It's very unlikely that a $40.00 violin will be playable and she will end up unhappy and frustrated--the violin is tough enough when you have a decent one. Even the $200 ones are a crap shoot but you've got a chance at WWBW and they'll stand behind they're instrument if you don't like it or there are problems. They may be able to help with sizing too.
If you have a music store near you renting might be a better option. Maybe $20/month, should be decent and they'll give you the right size.
Here's a string only site Shar Music

Her teacher had suggested the sharmusic site, and they seem to have great prices.I emailed them last night and they responded with a way to measure her for what would be the right size.Im almost positive she will need the largest as she is as big as an adult, lol.

I am looking on the WWBW site too. They seem to have great prices as well, thanks so much for the links!
