Rams need good quality water (low Nitrates), no bully fish (large cichlids) and good quality food. They also like plants and rocks to hide in. I currently keep my two in a 20G with Congo Tetras and they get along fine.

For mt trio that I had for 2 yrs they were kept with a large variety of fish. I had mine with convicts, gourami's, bettes, barbs, darters, african cichlids(only fry through juvi), guppies. maybe more but thats what I can remember right now. My Rams spawned 3 times over those 2 yrs and I am not one to do water param tests, I experienced no problems with health or aggression from Rams or other fish towards Rams. I re-homed them when I moved from Pa to Fl. Just my experience.
