just getting started with a 5 gal aquarium and 16 oz of highly concentrated water conditioner. 1ml conditioners 20 gallons. How can you measure for 5 gal. 1/4 fourth of 1 ml I assume but that is so minute. Is it easy to get to much or is it pretty safe (the tap water conditioner)?
There are 10 drops in 1 ml, so you want 2.5 drops. Personally I would only do 2 drops, and here is the reason:
Substrate, decorations, fish, etc., all take up space. Your 5 gallon aquarium will probably only hold 4.5 gallons of water to begin with (take measurements of the inside of the tank instead of the outside, and only measure as high up as you plan on letting the water go, then multiply the 3 numbers together and google the conversion). Then subtract the volume of substrate and decor that is going to go in, and you should be right around 4 gallons.
The other thing you can do is go to a pharmacy (I use RiteAid because it's right around the corner from where I live, but Walgreen's, etc., have them) and get a 5 ml oral syringe (if you ask at the pharmacy, they will give it to you free), and you can use that to do the drops/measure out 1/4 ml
