Default n00b!

Hi, all. Just bought my first aquarium for me and my kids (age 9 and 6) - a 15 gallon tank with, so far, 6 neon tetra and 2 glowfish. Super excited to learn all about keeping fish.

a few months ago i got my first tanks. i was super excited and went fish crazy. a word of advice: research your fish. i wanted to start a tetra tank and purchased black neon and red serpae. turns out all my reds were male and fought each other till eventual death. it really sucked. the black neons are perfectly fine though. i did some research and got them some tank mates. if u need decor ideas look at pics on this site and others. i also suggest getting a larger tank because once the fever sets in you'll want more! its such a relaxing hobby.

also get some kind of water aerator. it will create current and oxygenate the water. both good things for your fish!

Welcome! Please read on the nitrogen cycle. A new tank needs to develop a natural process for getting rid of chemicals such as ammonia and nitrites that are poisonous to fish. This process can take up to 8 weeks and the survival of your fish relies heavily on testing these chemicals (testing kits are readily available at aquarium stores and online) and doing water changes when the levels get out of hand. Usually, this cycling process is done without any fish in the tank or with one or two hardy types. PLEASE search the forum on this topic to avoid losing your fish!

Welcome to the fishkeeping hobby. It will bring you a lot of joy and satifation. just remember that with smaller tanks, problems with the water become bigger problems faster. Just keep close tabs on the water and ask lots of questions. hopefully you have a good LFS nearby. Enjoy.
