Default Just started an aquarium today.

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself:

Had a few aquariums as a kid ranging from 5 to 29 gallons, but haven't had more than a betta bowl for over 40 years. Friend gave me a 20 gallon high complete with Topfin 60 filter and fluorescent hood and heaters! I just filled it today and I'm doing a fishless cycle for the next 7 days with something called "Stability". I'm going to have a simple tank with black gravel, neon tetras and albino catfish, a few plastic plants and a petrified piece of wood. That always did it for me as a kid and I'm looking forward to that familiar mesmerized feeling it always gave me to watch them.

Its nice to be here, I'm sure I'll have some questions.

Thanks!

Walter

Welcome!

Your plan sounds good but don't put too much trust in cycling products, their usefulness is somewhat debatable. An ordinary fishless cycle will usually take about 4 weeks. Also make sure the type of catfish you get won't get too big for your tank when it grows up.

It's nice to have you with us. I love to watch my tanks too.

Couldn't wait, got 3 White -Tipped Tetra Hasemania nana today and a few real plants to go with my plastic ones. Got a test to keep track of ammonia too.

A friend offered me a complete 55 gallon setup a couple of years ago but I wasn't ready. Plus their fish were really big. I already wish I had it.

In a couple of weeks, with a healthy tank I'll get the neons and couple of albino corys.

So far so good. did my first 15% water change yesterday. I have 5 fish now and they seem to be doing well. Can't wait to add some neons!
