Welcome glad to have ya here, I feel keeping fish can be a wonderful hobby, I find it so relaxing to just sit there and watch them swim around and eat and play. Feel free to ask any questions and please read up on cycling before you come home with fish, you will have a MUCH better chance of survival if you do things right, what kind of fish were you thinking of keeping?

Hi Hanky,

Thank you - Yes I will make sure I cycle my tank. I like gold fish but was told that they were very dirty- can mess up the tank - since I only have 29 gallon tank I was told (from a guy at Petco) that could only keep one gold fish as my only fish. Any thoughts?

Welcome. In answer to your question, I think fishkeeping, for me, has been a mixture of challenge and reward. I honestly had no idea how much work it was going to be to create the tank of my dreams, but even though I am nowhere near to creating that dream tank, I have become totally addicted to the hobby. I have had some trouble along the way, but with the help of the people on this forum I have had some great success. I was able to raise some unexpected danio fry to about 3/4" (so far), and am now enjoying learning about planted tanks. There will always be more to learn, so the hobby never gets boring.

Yes i do have some thoughts for ya, I actually been reading up on goldfish posts here because my current tank is a bit overstocked, I have 3 goldfish that my kids won at the fair in there along with a bunch of other fish, everyone gets along just fine and its a very active tank but I do alot of extra cleaning to keep the water just right.
The petco guy is right, for 1 goldfish you want at least a 29 gal, and add 10 gal for each additional fish, they do poop alot, some of them goldfish can get over 1 foot in a couple years.
I did see a video on youtube of a lady with like 15 goldys in a 75 gallon tank but she was running 5 filters to keep it clean. if you stick to the smaller species you might get away with 2-3 but should have alot of filtration.
Fishkeeping can be alot of work but thats why they call it a hobby, and to me its well worth it. good luck and keep us all posted
