Default Hi from Va

Hi All,

I can't say I have much experience. I have a 10 gallon tank with 4 neon tetras. I've had them for about 6 months. So far so good. This is my first go. I heard they are hearty little buggers. I figure if I don't kill these guys I might eventually work toward something more ambitious someday.

Gabby.. welcome to the group!.. Don't sell yourself short.. Neons are NOT the easiest fish.. I keep discus, angels, rams and apistogammas and have as much trouble with neons as any others... I too am in Va.. Richmond area in fact... Where are you located?.. Bill in Va.

You are doing great.
Your tank now has a good bacteria culture going now.
The first 3 weeks are the hardest.

A 20% water change every month or so will do wonders.
I my self have a GE under the counter water filter that I use for drinking water and
to do water changes.
During the winter I make sure to check the water temp before adding it to the
tank. I just take a pyrex measuring cup full of water and put in the microwave for 1 minute and pour it into the bucket with the cold water and stir it up then check the temp and make sure it is not over 76F (the temp I keep my tanks.)

and I add it slowly to the tank with a pice of air line tubing as a siphon.

Welcome!

As long as you do your weekly water changes you should be fine. Neon's are NOT hearty fish, so the fact that you've kept 4 for 6 months is fantastic! They do like to be in schools of 6+ so you could even add 2 more of them. :D

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your warm warm welcome.

KG4MXV - Did you know that humans can judge water temperature to within 1/2 of 1 degree?

WilliemCd (and others) will fish school across species? In other words will my neons school with cardinals? So you are in Richmond too, eh? Oh my it IS a small world isn't it? LOL.

Well... I was doing great until I came home from vacation to find one of my fish not doing so well, which is why I signed up on the forum. Off to the freshwater disease board. :(

Yes, fish will school with others.. I've a black skirted tetra that thinks he's a lampeye... My neons (2) joined the pack of 4 cardinals.. and as impossible as it seems, appears to be coloring more like the Cards..
Yea, Richmond. There is a pretty big event going on yesterday and today. Skoolzoffish is having an open house. He is normally not open to the public but this weekend he is!.. I think today's hrs are 12 - 4. Ad is on CL.
Another thing you might consider, we have a mostly Richmond based Fish Club. Over 100 members since forming in April. There are bouts of activity followed by inactivity..
If ya join, please keep posting to this forum too!.. The site:
