Hello and welcome to this forum. This is by far the most informed group and friendliest bunch of fish keepers on the internet!
Read up on the nitrogen cycle. Get a Liquid test kit. Many here use the API Fresh Water Master Test Kit. It happens to be on sale for $19.99 on the Foster/Smith web site. Post any questions giving us as much info as possible. Helpful info includes tank size, filtration, lighting, feeding amount and how often, substrate, water parameters (Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates) current inhabitants (the aquarium, not your house). If proper data is provided initially it will often speed up a solution to the problem you may be having. Most of all, HAVE FUN!
