Default Hello, I'm new to the site~!

Hello everyone,
My name is Ming and I am new to this whole salt water aquarium thing. I am trying to build a 200 gallon system for my office and was wondering if there are any good tips for starting this tank. I settled my water in for 4 weeks and put it some small frags that I bought at a local store and they all died :( . Anyone know where I should start or any fingers to point me in the right directions? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Also, I am looking to hold mainly live corals, maybe fish later on, but these corals I see in all of these other member's tanks are awesome! I see a lot of people using sand, is sand necessary? I'll try to take some pictures of the system that I have very soon. Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site! going big at first will lead u in the right path. the reason your corals died is because corals need high lighting, lots of calcium, iodine and other nutrients, and REALLY clean water! for sand, its your choce.

Hello everyone,
Sigh.. Bad news... I haven't been really active lately because the fish tank that I just bought cracked and all the water spilled everywhere!!!! AHHHHHHH I am getting it repaired at the moment but it really angers me because I just bought the tank and added the water and salt. I'll be back soon as soon as it gets fixed!!

Hello,
I talked to the guy that sold me the tank and he said that my tank was positioned on an even floor so it caused the weight pressure to bend the bottom of the glass. Sounds legitimate, so hopefully it'll be fixed and water will be in by next week! Thanks for the support

I went to a fish shop today and they told me it is required to have a RO system. Is this true or is he just trying to sell me equipment? Does everyone here use an RO system? Also all my live rock died, anyone got any good recommendations on where to get some live rocks? Any input / help would be appreciated. Thanks!

the live rock "dying" is a natural part of the nitrogen cycle. if u plan to keep corals and your tap water isn't exceptionally clean than yes an RO is required

When I lived in that area, tap water was close to 1000 ppm of TDS, OAS. I doubt the water has become better after 30 more years. The water is shipped hundreds of miles in open concrete aquaducts to arrive where you are. The concrete is not very kind to the water quality and having half the water evaporate coming across the desert does nothing to improve it.

You could get by with a 75 gpd system with a booster pump cranked up to 90 psi, especially if you have some storage capacity to make your water chnage water ahead of time.
