Albino Long Fin Plecos

Hi, I joined this site to hopefully find some help with a few aquarium problems. I have had aquariums for years, but haven't had a big one for a couple of years and am trying to get one started again. I'm having trouble keeping longfin albine plecos alive-maybe I can find out what I'm doing wrong. I have had two-not at the same time, and they have both lived for about three months and then died. They look perfectly healthy-they are just dead. I thought the first one might have died because of not having driftwood so I added a couple of pieces of boiled wood from the LFS. But the second one still died. All of the other fish are fine.

Re: Albino Long Fin Plecos

Are you feeding them? They need more than just algae. Also how long has the tank been setup? What are your readings for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates? Numbers not just saying fine.

Welcome. Susan is the pleco expert here, she will get to the root of the problem.

Re: Albino Long Fin Plecos

More Info.... The tank has been set up for about a year.
The only water test I have on hand is a Ph test kit. The Ph is consistantly 6.7-6.8. I am pretty sure that the nitrates are not too high-it is a small tank and I change a about gallon a week. I'm not sure about ammonia-I will go get a better test kit this week. I put shrimp pellets in for bottom feeders. The small Clown Pleco I have had for 6 months or so is doing great. As I said before, all of the other fish seem fine so I don't think i is urgent to get the tester right now, I just want to see what is wrong before I try again with another Albino Pleco.

OK first, you do need ammonia and nitrite test kits. they are more toxic to fish than nitrates. I need numbers. What size of tank is it. Another thing, clowns and bn's shouldn't get to much meat products, it causes problems with their digestive tracts. They need hard woods and freshautolinker.com autolinking image veggies added to their diet.

With a clown and a bn the tank needs to be at least 40 gal. They are major waste producers so I would imagine your ammonia and nitrites are on the high side. You should also be changing out at least 25 to 30% weekly and if all your doing is one gallon change a week it is not enough.

Re: Albino Long Fin Plecos

You cant keep plecos in small tanks, they make a lot of waste. they like to eat vegetables like zucchini, sweet potatoes, and mine like broccoli. The key to healhty fish is good water, enough space, and good food. Provide these and your fish will not die.

Re: Albino Long Fin Plecos

Thanks everyone! I still have to go get the test kit this week, but I will get the water changed and hopefully get rid of a lot of the ammonia and nitrites. It is a small tank (7 gallons) and in the next couple of weeks I am going to upgrade to a 20Long. I will probably not add another pleco(I'll just have the 1 clown pleco) until I can get a 30g so any advice on what to do to keep algae down? Do oticinlus eat algae-could I add a couple of those?
BTW I have a lot of live plants and just before he died my albino longfin started eating on them-maybe a dietary thing since I haven't been adding algae wafers because there is some on the glass.

Re: Albino Long Fin Plecos

Small amounts of algae are normal, problem amounts of algae are usually a sign you tank is out of balance so sort out the water conditions first. No algae eater will eat all types of algae but I like nerite snails and shrimp the best.
