Lightbulb suggestion/request: mobile device support

Dear AquariumForum.com staff,

Please start supporting mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets. Please support tapatalk.

Using your full blown website on my tablet bogs it down and eventually I can't even type messages on the forum boards anymore until I restart my browser. It is so annoying that I find myself going elsewhere to forums with mobile support so I can type, when all the time I'd rather be here on AquariumForum

This means a great deal to me. Than you for your consideration. Without mobile support, I will eventually have to leave the forum because, despite the best people here, it becomes so useless to me when I can't use it at all.

Thank you.

Chat is really the only thing I can't do right now. I have posted pics from my phone, responded to threads, deleted spammers, etc.. I think tapatalk will enable everything with less bw requirement.

May I ask where you got your iphone because with a contract they are $200. Without a contract they are $500 - $600.

But I also support a mobile application. Like jr said the only thing I can't do with my phone is chat.

I can understand the side issue, but to keep things on track I'd like to focus on what can and can't be done on a mobile device at aquariumforum.com. Up front I'm going to ask that you take this post with a bit of a thick skin. It's a bit to the point and I don't mince words when I type it...

Friends, tapatalk is the premier app for both iphone and android for interfacing with online forum websites. It does not, to my knowledge, support chat yet. It may, but I have never used it. What it does offer, however, is something I find invaluable and absolutely vital to the use of aquariumforum.com on mobile devices. Simply put, it is the ability to use the website at reasonable speeds without a huge slowdown. With a wifi enabled device or 4G--or even 3G for that matter--mobile compatibility would let us use aquariumforum.com without the tremendous slow down that you get when browsing the website as it currently is from an iphone, android, or blackberry.

The slowdown is akin to using a fax modem! Typing lags. Pages load slowly because they take so long not to download, but to render. This page that I'm typing on now has 18 thousand lines of html and css code. Do you honestly think a mobile phone can render that in under 20 seconds? Really? The embeded javascripting and extra animated graphics also slow things down, like the little "google it" icon for example. We are also entering the days when online data usage for phone carriers is paid for by the gigabyte, and overages are costly. Downloading that much data per pageview eats up our data plans. Even the so-called "unlimited" plans have a 2G ceiling.

Mobile devices need a simple interface like tapatalk that supports posting, profile settings, PHOTOS and video, etc. Tapatalk lets you do those things and you can do them just as quickly (or more) on your mobile device as you can on a home or office computer. It improves the experience ten fold, and actually makes the site usable.

Currently, the slow down and degradation of performance while using the website on a mobile device just isn't acceptable, and this will only worsen with time as mobile computing becomes more prolific, especially with the advent of windows 8 which is expected to really push things forward into the mobile computing sector. Technology is moving forward while this website stands still.

Aquariumforum.com can get up to speed with technology and support users who use mobile devices on the go, or it can alienate us. Currently, the hollow promises of "we'll look into it at some time in the future" are not doing anything to help. They are, if anything, just making things worse; such replies are disingenuous and obviously so. If there were plans to support mobile computing devices, someone would say so. There would be a commitment to, or at least a stated goal to commit to a roll out of mobile support on a given date. "Some time in the future", and "we'll think about it" are things you say to door-to-door salesmen when you don't want them to come back.

Attention admins, you have users who will do the same thing-- they too will go and not come back. Instead you will bleed membership activity until it has been reduced to a trickle as users move on to other corners of the internet that provide something useful to the audience that increasingly depends on newer technology that you are choosing not to support. We already increasingly spend time at other places instead of this website because it is so much easier. You can attempt in your minds to dismiss these things as the rantings of a lone user, but you will eventually see that many people participate less and less on this website it because it's not nearly as convenient and quick as whipping out a post, a question, or providing assistance with a few keystrokes on a fast and responsive mobile app.

Admins, owners, don't bury your heads in the sand on this one please. You stand to lose more than just ad revenue, relevance, and mindshare. Other aquarium related forums have already supported tapatalk and other mobile forum apps for at least two years. Come on, don't push us aside. We use iPads, android tablets, smart phones, and netbooks. We are using newer technology more and more. Move ahead with us, so we can continue to use this site as we move into the future. If you do not, you are making the choice to be left behind. How unfortunate that would be.
