I would like to take this time to start an open-ended thread. I was wondering how we could get more people to join the forums. Any suggestions are open for discussion.

I'm so sorry I haven't been on the forum in so long! Don't worry, I haven't forgotten this lovely website! I moved to a different county back in May 2011 and started high school in a totally different school district. So I'm still adjusting and studying hard, and don't presently have any aquariums. But once I do, I'll be right back on this forum!

It depends on who they are and what their situation is as to whether I ask my friends to join. If I feel they would be an asset here then I ask them but if they have been unfortunate member elsewhere and/or I feel they would be unwilling to follow the rules here I do not ask them. Some people just do not like the forum set up and being structured. Some of my friends have a lot of talent in this business and would be really good for information but do not have the time or wish to get involved in this so they offer me the benefit of their knowledge when I need it to help me out but otherwise do not want to be bothered with the forum sites themselves. Some of the people whose brains I am allowed to get into even do it on the condition that I do not encourage or nag them about joining forums. It is not for everyone. But as long as they are willing to share their expertise with me and I can use the knowledge they give me to help others I will live by their rules too.

There are also a lot of fish forums out there and while to me and to a lot of us this is actually the very best one there is available, there are a lot of others who are already involved in another one and are very happy there. While I know a lot of people in the fish hobby, most of them are already in a forum home and quite happy where they are. I have tried to extoll the fine points of this forum and the polite ways that people are treated which I consider a very big plus, but if someone is not unhappy where they are it is very difficult to change them. You nearly never get anywhere running down the forum they are in, it just makes them angry and more determined not to leave it.

I agree with the rule to not discuss other forums on this forum. It would just be another form of spam in a sense. It would not make sense for the Administrators to allow other people to come in and advertise their forums which do the same thing that this one does on this forum. This is not something that is a rule just here but if you go to any other forum I think you will find that it is the way it is in almost all of them. If you need to refer to a forum like a plant forum to get a bit of information across that is needed to explain an answer that is one thing but to refer a member to another fish forum is another matter. Every forum I have ever been a part of will ban a member or delete there post and issue a warning for doing that depending on how many times they have been warned.

Be very careful about selecting people that you do or don't recommend. If you choose only experienced fish keepers, nobody really needs advice and the forum dies back to minimal activity. If you only recommend the site to newbies, the advice gets pretty bad and people soon realize it and move on. I would much rather recommend the site to new and experienced alike and take what comes along. We will have a more diverse membership that way where the old hands, even the ones who are new here, can help the newcomers move forward and it will build their willingness to continue going forward to become the advisers as they gain the needed experience and self confidence. In my own case, I am very experienced in very narrow areas so I can both be a newbie in some areas and the old man of the sea in other areas. I never was any good at diseases but that is because I never seem to see them in my tanks. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? It is a terrible thing when people need disease advice because I have almost none. It is a good thing if I can help people never need to learn about disease. We need everyone here to make a vibrant diverse community.
