I think most people here don't use fishbowls, as they are too small for the majority of fish....and I'm pretty sure that you posted this in the wrong area of the site.

Indeed. use the fishbowl as a candle holder and get a real tank. 10 gallons is a great size to start with, and is MUCH better for the fish. As for decorations, get some live plants in there. If you can still see gravel, add more plants.

we/they are helping you by stating the facts. fishbowls are way to small for almost all fish, pretty inhumane, They require alot more matinence too, you would need to change 50% of the water daily, which would be stressfull for your fish, they dont really have room for decorations. You would be doing yourself and your fish a huge favor if you scrap the fishbowl and get a 10 gallon with a filter, you really will appreciate it ALOT more.. you'd have more time to sit back and watch your fish instead of constantly cleaning their tank so they dont die. So, again, we/they are definetly trying to help you, you just need to want the help.

I agree that fish bowls are usually inhumane. But we are not trying to yell at you or anything, I used to have a fish bowl myself before I learned more about fish. I have seen some very large fish bowls that could work for some things. If you tell us how big your fish bowl is and what fish you have we might be able to give you more specific help.

When people mention fish bowls to me I always spit this out at them: would you like to live in a closet? If you really take time to think about it, it is about the equivalent for a fish. There is not much room, you can't really have much stock in there, hardly any water circulation, and from my point of view, the fish seem more happy in a bigger space. Another example are Betas. When ever I have decided to buy a Beta and brought them home, they have always gone into at minimum a 20 gallon tank, not a drinking glass like at the store. Every time with out fail their colors change and they end up looking vibrant and act completely different, because they are happy they aren't cramped up any more. I can't stress enough to you that you should go with at least a 10 gallon tank. They are about $50 for a complete set up depending on where you live. More than likely you will be happier with not having to change water EVERY DAY, having more fish, and more options to decorate as well. One last thing, get live plants, they are awesome. Check this link out as well The Fishless Cycle

Around here on craigslist and other classifieds there are constantly 10-20 gallon tanks offered for free/cheap and usually come with some accessories. your fish will be happy and since platies are tropical fish they need to have a heater to be healthy. No one is condemning you, we have all made boo boos and we are just trying to help you out so that you can sit back and enjoy the fish.

not fish bowl. Aquarium. Fishbowls don't have filter, heater, lid or light. The lid and the light aren't essential, but they make life easier.

Sorry I had not answered you before. As others have said it would be best to get a 10 gallon tank, is this a possibility for you? On the whole 10 gallons is the best place to start with fish tanks, smaller than that is hard to maintain. In fact many will say to get the biggest tank you can to start with.
As for fish bowls, 1/2 gallon ones are not good for any fish, 3 gallons is large for a fish bowl and could perhaps be used under some circumstances. I think your platies need more room but it could be okay for a betta. I would rather keep a betta in a 5 gallon tank but 3 gallons could work. Both bettas and platies are tropical fish so unless you have the bowl in a room that is always a warm, even temperature you need a heater. Seeing as you already have an air pump you could add a small sponge filter to it. If there is going to be any delay in getting a 10 gallon tank I suggest you add the sponge filter and heater and do plenty of water changes. An easy live plant like java moss or marimo ball also helps to maintain water quality. Short term, say for a month or so this will help to provide better conditions for your fish until you have a tank. |
