It has come to our attention that there are several member, new and old who do not understand our stand on fish keeping and breeding. This post is to inform you all of how we see things here.
General fishkeeping- We in no way support or condone any cruelty to any creature, and seeing it done so deliberately on this board may result in permanent ban.We are here to help you set up and care for fish PROPERLY.Overstocking purposefully and neglect is looked down upon. Breeding- Breeding your fish is not a way to make a profit unless you are properly set up.Please do not come to us saying you wish to breed this fish for this reason without doing proper research on the species of fish and getting all the supplies needed first. While babies will happen in some tanks please understand we do not promote it for profit, and being improperly setup will cause more harm to the fish than good. Fighting fish for sport- We will not stand for anyone asking tips on fighting fish for sport. Its a cruel act and will not be tolerated. I do hope everyone will read this, and learn from it.While we are a very friendly group we can only let people get by with so much.As our community grows its hard to be sure every member new and old understands without it written.

Im old school around here but this statement completely goes against the hobby as we are supposed to help eachother out
I would have NEVER started my aquatics business had it not been for info I achieved from this site and its members Breeding- Breeding your fish is not a way to make a profit unless you are properly set up.Please do not come to us saying you wish to breed this fish for this reason without doing proper research on the species of fish and getting all the supplies needed first. While babies will happen in some tanks please understand we do not promote it for profit, and being improperly setup will cause more harm to the fish than good. I would think that a fish forum would be the place to ask these questions and get these answers. Im not trying to stir the pot but other then the above cut and pasted statement I do agree with it all. I do understand we have rookies in the hobby but these rookies rely on the veterans to help them out and get them started. I will add that if you are interested in starting a for profit fish breeding operation you do need to do research that cannot be obtained on this site but I would also expect the members here who do have operations like this to help the new ones out. SusanKat was my mentor years ago and we have a big mutual respect for eachother and our livestock. |

White glove,I am not saying breeding is bad.Read what wrote, proper research.Which does go with this site as well as many others.I did three years of research before I decided to spawn bettas and even more before I moved on to wild types. Many fish are indeed easily bred, like the guppies and other livebearers. But when I see people wanting to breed these for money I am reminded of a tank I saw from someone once.It was a 29 gallon full of guppies, most were colorless and had deformed spines. There were so many in there you could not count them.I asked the keeper what was up and she said that was her way to make a little cash, but it backfired on her and she couldnt sell them even for ten cent a piece.
Just saying that if your going to breed do so responsibly and make sure to offer the fish the best you can.Otherwise the quality of your stock, regardless of where you started from will either suffer or gain from your care.

exactly my point. I breed discus and harder to obtain angels and I think Im doing well, I can sell out of livestock in 3 hours and not once has a single one been of less than perfect quality.
I get what both of you are saying but there are a few of us on here who do have their livelyhood and their families that rely on us that do know what we are doing to provide for the families. My breeding is purely or was purely for the challenge then I discovered people want especially at local club swaps they want that top notch quality that only someone who knows what they are doing can give them. It came across to me as if this was taboo and I know for a fact this place was founded on the fact that we need to communicate as a hobby and help eachother out. I commend you on breeding plakats as its something that is alot harder to do then breed fish in a tank, you gotta worry about murder, I gotta worry about fungus at the bad end of things lol |

LOL,no worries white glove. We do encourage breeding as long as you understand what you are getting into. Its something clearly stated even in my how to breed bettas thread. It takes time and commitment,as you yourself know very well.
Didnt mean for it to come across as taboo just as a general dont do it if your not going to do it properly. My grandfather always told me,"If you are going to do something,do it right,or do not do it at all." So basically thats what I was getting at lol.

grandpa said the same thing to my dad over 40 years ago, and well his basement turned into a guppy farm(mid to late 1960's) lol now look at the two of us, he has the life money to afford this hobby at an extreme level and to be honest it was his box of awards from the old aquarium club that got me really into the breeding(competition). I can literally make thousands in a few hours off my livestock because I breed them in the best of the best(cmon I make 400 gallons of RO water a day).
Im here to help people but my methods are a mix between old and new school ways. |

I had a question about this statement... Aren't there cases where you're supposed to overstock (within moderation) to limit fish aggression? Obviously the neglect part is never appropriate, but I have heard that cichlid setups specifically need overcrowding to prevent territories from being established.

Hm good question. In my experience its ok for territories to be formed if you have the room. This is coming from my experience with betta fish though.I am almost positive that those with cichlids have enough filtration for the tanks too.
So I suppose with everything there is exceptions.I will be researching this point, thanks :D
