goldfish can put out a lot of waste. Though i have never personally kept goldfish, it is generally advisable to put one in every 10 gallons, or the first in 30 gallons, and each additional goldfish should add 10 more gallons.

But to answer your question, yes, he should be fine in there, but not for too too long. I would try to put him into your 55g as soon as you can.
